Frequently Asked Questions

Looking for a Job in Canada

1) I live in Jamaica but plan on immigrating to Canada soon. I am currently a warehouse supervisor. Can you tell me where I would be able to find warehousing districts in Canada?

Have you already started the process of immigrating to Canada? If yes, great and if you are yet to apply then it is wise to start the process. Now, regarding your query about warehousing districts, please note that such districts exist all around. To locate a specific area, you are just better off doing a search on Google at http://www.google.ca by typing in for e.g. Warehousing district in ………….(Toronto, Kingston, London, etc).

Another way to locate a warehousing district is to conduct a search on some internet job boards like Workopolis at http://www.workopolis.com , Monster at http://www.monster.com, etc for a warehousing supervisor and you will get a better idea about the locations through the job postings. These are just two of the major Internet Job Boards and that are frequently used by employers across Canada. Once you get here as a Landed Immigrant you will be exposed to many more Job Boards available through Service Canada http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/lifeevents/job.shtml

2) I am a landed immigrant. I want to study here. I’m in Toronto now. I have completed a diploma in pharmacy from India and I want to join degree program here so where should I go and what should I do? Really I am very much worried about my career. Please help me out!

It is good that you want to pursue your education so that you may further your career here in Canada. Once you have decided that Pharmacy is the way to go, you can research relevant programs available in that field through universities and colleges.

Check out the various universities and colleges that offer degree programs such as University of Toronto, York University, University of Western Ontario and Humber, Seneca, Ryerson, George Brown, etc.

3) I am interested in working in Canada. I have four-plus years of experience in the field of administration and one year in recruitment. I don’t have a visa or work permit. Could you please advise me: what are the chances of me getting a job in Canada and getting a work permit?

Canada is very different from the USA in terms of employment visas or permits. My suggestion to you is to apply for immigration under the professional/skilled category. Get a Landed resident permit and then look for a job here. Your experience should also help you in getting a job here as well. However, employers here do not offer a work permit unless it is a very special skill required and there is shortage of local Talent. E.g. –Nurses.

I am a software test engineer with three-plus years of experience and I am looking for a new job in Canada in the same field, but the problem is my visa will expire at the end of November. Can you please advise me: what are the chances of me getting a job offer in Canada from a company that hires employees by sponsoring them for a visa and work permit?

Please refer to the answer to the question 3 given above. The same applies here too.

 7)      I am a new immigrant from India. I have done my bachelor's degree in mathematics and economics, and have a post-graduate diploma in computer applications. Now I seek your advice to find a relevant job.  I hope you will guide me.

You need to clarify whether you have any experience from India or just your education. In case you have some work experience then I would advice you to pursue a career in the same profession as long as you enjoy it and are passionate about it because then you will perform well at work. In the event that you have no work experience at all then I would recommend that you get your education / degrees assessed through World Education Services by clicking:

10) How can I explain to potential employers that my experience working in Dubai is extremely valuable? I am in financial planning.

Ideally work experience anywhere in the world should be valuable for employers in Canada. However, most if not all employers seek candidates with Canadian experience for their ease in training and adaptability. This is certainly a challenge and can be handled very easily by inquiring as follows:

Is a debit not a debit, or a credit not a credit in Canada in the accounting world? You may use this as a guideline and form your own industry related query in Financial Planning.
